SustainU® Clothing, a fully owned apparel brand of Coalfield Development (a 501(c)(3) family of social enterprises), is dedicated to the growth of American jobs, workforce development in Appalachia, and the use of sustainable materials. Coalfield Development believes in developing the potential of Appalachian places and people as they experience challenging moments of economic transition by unlocking people’s creative power to transform perceived problems into opportunities in the communities we call home. We empower people to have faith in themselves to learn and grow. People who have never dreamed of earning a degree walk across the graduation stage with pride and work beside our employees improving our own communities in real, tangible ways, such as rehabilitating dilapidated buildings, repurposing abandoned mine lands, and starting new businesses.
Formally unemployed people are hired on to work-crews that staff the five social enterprises of Coalfield Development. These work-crews provide labor on community projects that create assets for local residents and communities. Each week, crew members complete 33 hours of paid work, 6 credit hours of higher education, and 3 hours of personal development mentorship. At the end of their 2.5 year contract, crew members will have gained invaluable work experience, earned an Associates Degree, and gained clarity on life goals as well as the personal assets needed to attain those goals.
